- Hi gang,
- This is kinda long so bear with me. I'm doing a medieval castle type
- room with stone walls, wood floor and a fire place in one end. I've
- placed a table with two candles in the scene and I want my light to come
- from the two candles and the fireplace. I created my fireplace fire by
- adding a disk, deleting half of it so I have a fan shape and then
- tweaking the points to get a jagged edge. I then added the fire texture
- and made it a light source (point source). It actually looks pretty
- good. The problem is that I can't get the light to behave properly. With
- the fire objects y axis pointed toward the back of the fireplace I don't
- get any light cast into the room although I was under the impression
- that a point source light cast it's light in all directions. When I
- rotate it so the Y axis is pointing out into the room my floor and table
- top look very speckled. I'm assuming this is due to the fact that I made
- the table and floor somewhat shiny to get the look of polished wood and
- the low angle of my light source from the fireplace. Oddly enough, when
- rendered in scanline mode it looks a lot more like what I had in mind.
- I've also tried the fireball texture and I couldn't get that to work
- properly either.
- Sorry for the long winded post.

- I'd guess from your description the fireplace light casts shadows, and
- that the floor and table are slightly bumpy. If so, yes, your assumption
- about the low angle from the light source is correct. The reason that
- scanline looks more like what you intended is the fact that there are no
- shadows, and so everything looks a bit brighter.
-
- You can easily fix up your scene by adding a number of axes in front of the
- fireplace, and make them low intensity and non-shadow casting. You may want to
- make them directional, so they more or less only cast light out into the
- room. This should lessen the low light angle problem, and give a better
- ambient effect.
-
- Consider this, almost every real source of illumination is not a point
- source. When you try and imitate reality with Imagine, you need to add
- many small lights for a diffuse effect.
